When you pick the style first, Word inserts a text box into the document, but it can land anywhere-on a different page, outside the margins, and so on. If you prefer, you can click the WordArt button and pick a style before typing your text, but this can actually make the task a little harder. Click outside the WordArt text box to deselect it.
